Course Name: Drupal Styling for Beginners

Course Description:
This three day course will teach students the basics of Drupal theming using HTML and CSS.
> Students will learn how to install, configure and customize their own themes and then test them for display issues and other common problems.
> Students will design their own templates and learn how to use applications for design while following good practices and keeping their code clean.
> Assignments will be given at the end of each day and reviewed the following day to allow further practice and reinforce skills.
Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of HTML and CSS This hands-on course is not a programming class for students who are new to HTML and CSS.
Although basic CSS and HTML will be reviewed at the start of the course, some familiarity with HTML and CSS is assumed.
Materials: Each student will have his or her own Drupal website during the week of the course and be free to work with and expand upon it outside of class. Such "out-of-class development" is encouraged. Each class member is expected to bring his or her own laptop to the course location
Additional resources and material will be provided in class to facilitate learning. All course
documents will be referenced online.
Ground Rules: All questions are welcome. Interruptions are okay. Please raise your hand or toss
something at the instructor. The topic might be covered later, but the instructor will say so if that’s the case. Please participate! This class will be much more fun and interesting if all attendees participate in discussions.
There will be assignments; you are expected to complete the reading by the next class session.

Tuesday, February 28th - Styling Basics
HTML Basics, attendees will learn how to use the WYSIWIG content editor, the basics of html coding and how to creating their own pages with text and images. Which theme should I use? What is the best theme for an organization, whether it’s one of the default themes (core) that comes with Drupal, one that's built by someone else (contributed) or designed fresh (customized)?
How to install and setup themes.
Wednesday, February 29th - Configuring Themes
Theming with tools: Best coding practices and applications attendees can use to help them configure and design their own themes. Customizing themes: Attendees will take a core theme and customize it based on staff and user requirements while adding their own design elements.
Attendees will learn the basics of CSS and apply them to their custom theme.
Thursday, March 1st - Advanced Theming and CSS Customization
Configuring and using templates files: Attendees will learn how to edit files on the FTP server that can be used to create templates for certain content types as well as how to use more advanced CSS techniques. Attendees will review the theme they have created and test it in different browsers, and learn how to create files that will override certain browsers malfunctions and display issues, especially older Internet Explorer types.
